After the lone bridge—over rivers Beladoda and Khanduwasa—was washed away and no transport service, the people living in the remote Melghat villages including Hataru, Kutida, Ekatai, Salita, Sumita, Bhandum, Ghugum, Misori, Kanjarkheda, Chilati etc—are constrained to take about 50 km detour to reach the mainland, sources said.
As the far off villages are yet to receive aid there is rise in the incidence of diarrhoea reported from these areas, sources said. The damage to the bridge has blocked vehicular movement on the Amravati-Hataru-Doma route. A Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus has been stranded at Doma since last 15 days. Semadoha-Rayapur-Jarida route is blocked and people have to cover about 50 km distance on foot to reach the tehsil place.
The primary health centre at Hataru is catering to the needs of villagers of remote areas and the medicine and relief supplies are fast depleting, it is learnt.
Resident district collector Ravindra Thakre, while talking to TOI, said that efforts are on to construct a makeshift arrangement to restore vehicular traffic. Even district collector Dr Purushottam Bhapkar was on a visit to Chikhaldara and supervised the relief work on Tuesday.
